2016 Jeep Renegade: Fun in a Box

This fun little crossover need not get overlooked or put in a box so to speak.  It is roomier than you would think by the looks and has plenty more to offer.
The cubist design helps Renegade provide a roomy interior considering its mere 166 inches of overall length. Even the back seat, whose leg room can get snug behind a tall driver, boasts arena-like headroom. There's also a useful, two-tier cargo bay that isn't pinched by swoopy metal-bending.  And that sort of daily practicality, which extends to comfortable handling around town and easy maneuverability in crowded parking lots, is important to a vehicle that carries the twin burden of competing with soft-roaders like the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V while, at the same time, trying to uphold Jeep's bushwhacking reputation.

The latter is upheld primarily by the Trail hawk model, which shares Renegade billing with Sport, Latitude and Limited trims.  It offers backup camera and Renegade's four-mode -- Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud — Selec-Terrain 4WD system (Trail hawk adds a Rock mode).  The Latitude was powered by a 1.4-liter turbo four that mates exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission. That gear box was delightful to row, finding its gates effortlessly, while the 160-hp blown four felt enthusiastic under a heavy right foot thanks to 184 lb.-ft. of torque.  Limited, on the other hand, which carries about 165 pounds of additional curb weight, has a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter, 180-hp I-4 and is coupled to a  nine-speed automatic — that engine's only transmission.
